With fall comes the perfect time to enjoy comfort foods, warm clothes, and the delicious tastes of the season. And a slice of tasty pie is the best way to show what fall tastes like.
Even though pumpkin spice everything is popular right now, fall pies are the best dessert, especially after Thanksgiving dinner. However, you can treat yourself before the holidays. You can now enjoy some tasty fall pies at Sam’s Club.
Since I really like pies, I decided to test four of Sam’s Club’s Member’s Mark pies to see which one is the best. After sneaking a few bites of each pie, I ranked them from least favorite to favorite. Read on to find out which Sam’s Club pie you should buy this fall.
How Do You Make A Great Pie?
There are a few important things to look for in a pie: a filling that is just right, a crispy and buttery base, and, of course, the ability to go well with ice cream or whipped cream.
It can be too much for some people to handle sweet pies, and pies with a boring base or filling could be better. Here’s how each Sam’s Club fall pie measured up to these standards.
4. A pecan pie from Member’s Mark
- 560 calories for a piece (1/12 of a pie).
- 29 grams of fat
- 64 g of carbs, 37 g of which are sugar
- $12.98
Although pecan pie is a Southern favorite, this one from Sam’s Club didn’t live up to our hopes. The pecans on top were crunchy, but the filling needed to be richer and toasted like I was hoping. Instead, it was more like jello.
The crust was also a letdown; it broke apart too easily and lacked the buttery creaminess that the pecans’ nuts would have paired well with. The pie could have been better because it was too sweet.
The verdict:: If you want pecan pie, you might want to look elsewhere. It’sn’t worth your time because it has an odd taste and too much sugar.
3. Pumpkin pie made by Member’s Mark
- 370 calories for a piece (1/12 of a pie).
- 15 grams of fat
- 54% of the food is carbs (54 g).
- $5.98
For many, pumpkin pie is a must-have fall treat, but Sam’s Club’s version could have been better in terms of appearance and feel. My son saw right away that the pie’s top had little holes, making it look a little gross.
The pumpkin filling had just the right amount of spices but was too soft and tasted like baby food. This thickness is fine for some people, but you should skip this one if you like your fillings harder.
The verdict: The taste was fine, but the texture needed more fitting. If you like your pumpkin pie to be smooth and hard, this one might not live up to your hopes.
2. Mark Apple Lattice Pie from a Member
- 320 calories for a piece (1/16 of a pie).
- 15 grams of fat
- 33 grams of sugar, or 43 grams of carbs.
- It costs $10.98.
The beautiful, homemade look of this apple lattice pie and the hand-laid lattice crust made it stand out right away. The pie was full of freshly baked apples with the right sauce consistency. The lattice was dusted with sugar, which made it taste almost like a donut.
The apple filling tasted good. It was sweet but not too sweet, with just the right amount of cinnamon and spice to bring out the apple’s natural flavor. The pie was big enough to feed sixteen people, so it’s a great choice for parties. Even better, it won a Blue Ribbon at the 2019 National Pie Championships. I can see why.
The verdict: everyone loves this pie. It looks like it was made at home, and the filling is just right. It’s perfect for any fall party; you could even pretend it was made at home at a family meeting.
1. Mixed Berry Member’s Mark Pie
- 370 calories for a piece (1/16 of a pie).
- 17 grams of fat
- 50 grams of carbs, 24 grams of sugar
- $12.98
As fall pies go, apple and pumpkin pies are the norm. But this mixed berry pie was the clear winner in my taste test. With a mix of raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries, the filling was the perfect amount of sweet and sour. The buttery, crispy crust crunch went well with the fresh, bright taste of the berries.
Adding the cinnamon streusel on top gave each bite more texture and taste, making them delicious and well-rounded. The topping wasn’t too sweet because it let the berries’ natural flavors show through. If you want more taste, you can just add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to bring it all together.
The verdict: This mixed berry pie isn’t your usual fall dessert, but its bright taste and flaky crust make it stand out. This is a good choice when you want to try something different from apple or pumpkin pies.
Final Thoughts:
Sam’s Club has many fall pies to suit different tastes, but the Mixed Berry Pie has the best flavor, texture, and appearance. Fresh, sour berries and a buttery crust make this pie a show-stopper that’s great for any fall party. The Apple Lattice Pie is a more classic choice that tastes like it was made at home and has the right amount of spice in the filling.
Even though the Pecan Pie and Pumpkin Pie had their good points, they could have been better than their rivals. This fall, remember to pick up a Mixed Berry Pie at Sam’s Club. It will be a delicious treat.
